Why does there have to be a “bad guy”? You are looking at two people who met while they were in very different places in their lives—and Jeremy was almost twice Daphne’s age. They married in less than a year. Did they really love each other?

Hell, they didn’t even know each other. I’m not into fat shaming either, but I was in a similar relationship and my partner’s rather drastic change in appearance was a turn-off to me. I tried to talk to him … gently, then bluntly, and finally moved out of our bedroom when his snoring—which increased as his weight soared—made it impossible to sleep. I hung in for 17 years, although I started sleeping with other guys after 13.

I don’t blame him and I don’t blame myself. We both struggled to convince ourselves that we were happy—and we did the best that we knew to do, given our values, knowledge and experience. I would guess that the same is true for Jeremy and Daphne.
