What you have just related is a classic example of hypergamy … the desire (in the majority of people) to date or marry “up.” This typically means something slightly different for each of the sexes: women are more often looking for long-term security while men are frequently focused on physical attraction. Neither may be entirely conscious of what is driving their romantic choices. The woman dating your friend was simply more clumsy in pursuing her strategy.
