The backdrop for this lurch to the extreme right is the sense of victimization felt by so many evangelicals and fundamentalists as they have watched both science and the broader culture reject their narrow vision of reality. Their fear and defensiveness has been repeatedly exploited, by the elder Falwell and his so-called Moral Majority, by the Koch network and its anti-science (and pro fossil fuels) campaign, and finally—as you rightly said—the most immoral president in the past two centuries. It is as sad as it is frightening.
