That is an excellent question, and I suspect that the answer lies in our fundamental human nature. We are capable of dreaming of unborn worlds in which all people are cherished, cared for and have an opportunity to mature into their best selves. We are also capable of rationalizing genocide if doing so serves our personal needs. And it is entirely possible for the same individual to nourish both inclinations simultaneously. At the end of the day, we--as voters--need to take our responsibilities, which include some basic comprehension of key issues, recognizing the more common dog whistles and realistically assessing the past performance of candidates, far more seriously than we currentlytend to do.
