Thanks for opening up a chapter of Midwestern history that very few are familiar with ... growing up in Keithsburg, Illinois (current population est. to be 350 but I think that is a stretch) I was aware that the town had once adopted a sundown ordinance. However, no one seemed to recall what had prompted that action and I am not aware of any mining in the surrounding area.
But I am hardly an expert on Illinois history. The lack of diversity was just one of many reasons that led me, as a child, to resolve to leave the state as soon as I could do so. My parents gave me a set of luggage as a high school graduation gift and my hometown is now a fading memory. But you have aroused my curiosity, and for that I thank you.
