While most people who know me would probably describe me as a liberal, I do believe that if we must be cursed with political parties we need both a progressive one, as well as a more moderate, conservative one. Society must progress, but this is ideally done at a steady, deliberative pace. There was a time that the Republicans embraced that kind of conservatism--preferring the status quo, but still proud (and defensive) of our form oif democracy. Sadly, the party that exists today is committed to an extreme form of libertarianism in fiscal affairs, and some version of Christian nationalism in social matters. But yes, the Republican Party of yesteryear is dead and probably cannot be resurrected.
