Thank you for this ... I was not familiar with the historical use of the word as a non-gendered pronoun suitable for both singular and plural application. I am a stickler for both rules (after all, there is a right way to do everything, isn't there?) and history, so I will make a genuine effort to stop grinding my teeth every time I see they deployed as a singular pronoun!
