Not sure that I have much to add to the insightful comments already made, but as a gay, Jewish (and yes, white) man with a black boyfriend and two beautiful biracial grandchildren, I know how difficult it is, and how long it can take, to truly enter another culture and to begin to see, however imperfectly, the world through a very different set of eyes. Much easier to smile, affirm that all people are equal, and proudly announce that you are an ally … before going back to the comfortable side of the tracks. Bridging the many divides that we humans have created (racial, religious, sexual, etc.) is damned hard work and takes a lifetime. But as the old proverb reminds us, it is not given to us to complete the task — nor to desist from it.
