No one should ever feel obligated to spend time with a stranger, and there is nothing at all wrong with listening to your last-minute intuition. All you owed him was the courtesy of cancelling when you decided not to go … a simple “I apologize for any inconvenience, but have decided that this is not something I choose to pursue. I wish you the best in the future.” If I read it right, by the time you decided to cancel you already knew that (a) he had lied to you; (b) that he was a control freak; (c) that conversation with him didnʻt flow; (d) that he was inconsiderate (making you wait unnecessarily for directions); and (e) he had a negative view of every “bitch” that he had been out with. You were far more accommodating of him than he merited because he sounds like a potential stalker. Congratulations for cutting him off before you met in person … it almost certainly would have been more difficult afterward.
