Interesting theory, and certainly that kind of Machiavellianism is not alien to Putin. I am amazed at his seeming incompetence, given his reputation for shrewdness. In any event, I have enough of a military backgroumd to know at least one thing: wars are not won by brilliant strategy--they are won by the side that makes the fewest mistakes.
