I, too, would normally join the “turn off the spigot — my God, the man is 45 already!” chorus, but I understand how difficult it can be to set limits with a rebellious and/or troubled teenager (if you haven’t had a phone call from a child saying that he is sitting and staring at a gun and contemplating the mess that his life has become, you have no idea what terror is … so please don’t judge Dad without all the facts). Kristin’s proposal to link financial assistance to financial therapy is probably the best alternative, provided that you ask around and find one with good references …. they are not all equally skilled and this family clearly needs some competent help.
