I am not that familiar with the various religious sects and denominations in the UK, but I have an undergraduate degree in comparative religion and am fairly up to date on the scene across the pond. What strikes me as rather curious is that mainstream Christian denominations in the U.S. have long accepted that the Bible was not literally dictated by God, that much of it is metaphorical and that there are historical errors in it. But when it comes to the condemnation of gay men in Leviticus it suddenly becomes absolutely essential to interpret that passage literally. At least the evangelical churches have consistency on their side, even if--and I speak here as a liberal Jew--their theology is difficult to either follow or justify.
