A number of months ago, a large group of historians evaluated all of our former presidents, using a wide variety of criteria, and decided that as bad as he was, he was only the third worst—for what it may be worth. As another commenter mentioned, Buchanan, who preceded Lincoln, was deemed the worst because of his disastrous handling of the situation with seceding states.
