It clearly promotes safer sex ... the only contact a person has with his or her partner is visual and/or auditory. I could go on at great length about the peculiar blindness that many religious communities have developed around their own ethics and religious practices--and the harm that they have caused. American Protestantism is hardly alone in that regard--but it has definitely stood out. Sadly. consistency is not one of the more prominent human virtues.
